Rent a cello in Berlin

The price depends on the cello. I have four sound classes: children's cellos and solid student cellos from €33, soulful student cellos for advanced players from €49, old cellos with character from €79, soloist cellos individual. Which class fits you, we'll find out together — get in touch and I'll advise you personally.

Yes — historic and vintage cellos are my passion. You can rent old cellos at my place that are often over 100 or 200 years old, with their very own, particularly characterful sound that modern cellos rarely match. Each cello is a unique piece with its own history — chosen by visiting musicians and conservatory students who want a real instrument, not a generic student model.

Yes, absolutely. Many of my renters are international students, visiting musicians or expats on shorter stays. We can arrange a rental that fits your time in Berlin — for the duration of an audition, semester, residency, sabbatical or research stay. For very short rentals under three months, a short-term rate applies. Get in touch and we'll find the right solution.

You can cancel monthly — there's no minimum rental period for a regular rental. For very short rentals under three months — for an audition, concert or trip, for example — a separate short-term rate applies, because the organisational effort on my side is the same. Yes — short-term rentals for concerts, auditions, recordings and visiting engagements are part of what I offer. Touring musicians and audition candidates often choose a historic cello with solo qualities for the occasion. Short-term rentals run on a separate tariff that reflects the short-notice availability — just send me your dates and the nature of the engagement, and I'll suggest the right instrument.

Yes. For masterclasses, summer academies and conservatory entrance auditions in Berlin, I can provide a high-quality cello suited to the occasion. Just let me know the dates and the level of repertoire you'll be playing, and we'll match the right instrument.

Of course. The rental contract is monthly and continues automatically — no fixed minimum beyond the first month. If your tour, semester or stay extends, simply keep the cello; if you need to end the rental sooner than expected, a short notice is enough.

No. There's no deposit with me — you only pay the monthly rent.

Cello, bow, case or soft cover, rosin and cleaning cloth — all ready to play. Insurance is included. If I bring your cello to your home personally, a delivery fee applies (€29–59 depending on distance).

I personally bring the cello to your home — from my base at Lake Wannsee to every Berlin district as well as Potsdam and Kleinmachnow (€29–59 depending on distance), no anonymous shipping box. Further afield on request. On request I bring several cellos so you can compare and choose. Alternatively, you're welcome to pick the cello up in person from my place in Berlin-Wannsee.

Insurance is included. With normal use and small scratches, you don't need to worry. For bigger damage, we'll talk personally.

Yes, some of my cellos are also available for purchase. After longer rentals, I credit part of the rent towards the purchase price. Get in touch if you've grown attached to a particular instrument.

If you're not yet certain the cello fits your long-term path, renting is the more flexible route — monthly cancellable, no large upfront cost, and you get to know different instruments before committing. If you already know you want to stay with it, there's a selection of historic cellos available to purchase — I'm happy to advise you through the transition from rental to ownership.

The right cello size depends on your child's age and arm length — younger children typically start on a 1/8 or 1/4, around age 11–12 most fit a 3/4 cello, and from about age 14 a full 4/4. I'm happy to help you find the right size, and we can try several instruments together at the first meeting. As your child grows, you simply switch to the next size within the same rental contract.

When your child outgrows their cello, I'll be happy to see you. You come by, we choose the right cello in the next size together, and I'll set up a new rental contract — everything else stays as it was.
